Weather and climate:
– Britain has a moderate[1] and well-balanced[2] climate
– the prevailing[3] winds are south-western and the weather is influenced by the Atlantic
– in winter the weather is cold and dry, of continental type
– the average difference between temperatures in winter and summer is largest inland
– the summer lasts from June to September and the temperatures are hovering[4] around 20 degrees
– at any time the weather is cloudy and rainy
– the lowest temperatures in winter are not lower than –7°C
– the average rainfall[5] is about 900 mm
Vegetation:
– the woodlands occupy about 8 % of the surface
– most of Britain is agricultural[6] land – 1/3 is arable[7] and the rest are pasture and meadows
– elaborate[8] land drainage[9] systems have been developed to cultivate the wet grounds[10]
