The movie industry started in Hollywood, California. This suburb of Los Angeles soon became home of many movie stars. The first big studios were MGM and Paramount. But with the invention of television, the Hollywood studios began to decline. Fewer people went to the movie theaters and making movies also became more expensive. The industry moved to other states such as Florida and Texas because there were lower costs. But movies are still made in Hollywood. The Universal Studios are great tourist attraction. You can catch there stars on the set. Movies are rated in five categories:G-general audience-anybody can watch it, PG-parental guidance advised-anybody can watch it, but the movie can show sex, violence or obscene language, PG13-parental guidance advised under 13-only those over 13 can watch the movie, R-restricted-only those over 18 can watch these movies, X-x-rated-pornographic movies for adults only.
The average American child watches TV 20 hours a week. Anyone who watches a lot of TV is called a „couch potato“. About 60% of Americans have cable TV, which has minimum of 50 channels. With satellite dish you can get over 250 channels. Many channels broadcast 24 hours a day. During a 60-minute TV program you can expect 12 minutes of commercials. Americans watch very few foreign channels. Pornography channels have passwords to protect children from pornography. By 1950s, TV had become popular.*TV dinners. sitcoms(Bill Cosby Show)-it is short for situation comedies, there is prerecorded laughing(Friends-it´s about six single 30aged people living in the same apartment building talkshows(Jay Leno Show)-the host starts with a funny monologue and then he has famous guests come on, one by one, and talk about themselves, probably most popular talk show in the U.S. is daytime talk show hosted by African-American Oprah Winfrey, popular topics are for example-women who spy(tajně sledují) on their husbands, mothers who dislike their daughters, criminals who blame(obviňují) their mothers, women who stay with their unfaithful(nevěrnými) husbands/lovers, stories of broken condoms, transsexuals and so on news programmes-more popular than traditional evening news are morning news shows because there are often cooking tips, exercise techniques and other practical items animated shows(The Simpsons)-it´s cynical look at the average American family, many people protest against this show because they think that the show has bad influence on their children police shows(New York Police Department Blue)-which shows police actions (NYPD Blue) game shows(Singled Out on MTV)-single man and single woman try to impress boyfriend or girlfriend, but on most game shows, the idea is to win money There are more than 9000 newspapers, of which 1.700 are dailies. There is only one national newspaper USA Today. It brings problems with distribution. Ads are also problem, because people for example in Boston don’t want to read ads for Texas or Dallas. Popular papers are also The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.
